On a misty Autumn morning we drank coffee and caught up with ES editor and all round wonder woman Chloe Street, to talk style hacks and the do’s and don’ts that get her through the busy party season. Here she shares her 7 top tips to fail safe super style…
1. You can never go wrong with a little black dress…
Cliché I know but so true. Rather than opting for that oh-so-of-the-minute high street number though, I now make efforts to invest in one or two more classic dresses or jumpsuits each season, then satiate my magpie-like craving for sparkle in the accessories department. I’ll buy fun earrings from Zara, colourful shoes from River Island (you can find gems in there if you’re prepared to trawl) and dinky bags from Mango.

2. Denim is always a good idea.
Whether a denim jacket thrown over a cocktail dress or a good pair of jeans with a ‘party top’ and heels, throwing a little denim in the mix takes the edge of dressier looks – which means you can pull off something a bit OTT fabulous without looking like you tried to hard.

3. Don’t be tight with the tights
Fashion girls love a bare leg however I personally am too much of a wuss to brave sub-ten degree temperatures with my pins out, and am thus heavily into black tights. My tip? A single pair of Woolfords or Heists might be twice the price of an M&S multipack but boy are they ten times more outfit (and general vibe) enhancing.
4. Swap makeup for skincare
Rather than glittery eye shadow or statement lipsticks, I tend to focus my cash and energies on good skincare. A daily dousing of hyaluronic acid serum (if I could bathe in Dr Barbara Sturm’s I would), a glycolic acid exfoliant every few days plus pre and post-party sheet masks (I adore Tatcha’s) are my go to glow givers.
Failing that, Laura Mercier’s longwear liquid under eye concealer and the Charlotte Tilbury Flawless Filter are lifesavers when disguising sleep deprivation.
5. Wear the heels
You bought the fancy heels. You love the fancy heels. You’re scared to wear the heels because London’s vibe is so dress-down and who knows, they might rip your toes to shreds… but who cares? Always err on the side of over-dressed and if they hurt, well, that’s why they invented Uber.
6. My favourite Harmur this season has to be…
The smoky black halter Classic top top. Pair it with matching silk palazzo pants and it magically transforms into a jumpsuit, or pair it with ripped jeans and frankly you’re ready for anything. Come summer I’ll wear it with wide legged white jeans and some By Far strappy sandals for a Riviera-ready look.
7. The best Christmas parties are…
The at-home drinks parties that turn into late night hoolies. I’ll wear a Harmur Classic top, Joseph skinny leather trousers, bejewelled flats, and one of the velvet Chinese jackets I had made when I lived in Hong Kong.
